The Mary Chilton Daughters of the American Revolution Foundation has awarded five grants worth almost $65,000 to charitable organizations in Sioux Falls, Pierre and De Smet, South Dakota. The grants were awarded to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society in De Smet, the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation in Pierre, the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum, East Sioux Falls Historic Site, the American Legion Auxiliary SD Unit 15, and the McCrossan Boys Ranch all located Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society was awarded $14,843.00. For generations of readers, Garth Williams illustrations in the Little House books are synonymous with Laura Ingalls Wilder's story. The Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society has more than 60 original pieces of artwork from Williams that illustrated the Little House books starting in the 1950's. The Society will use the grant to fund museum grade exhibit cases. The summer exhibit will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Garth Williams illustrations first being used in the Little House books. The exhibit "The Words and Images of Laura Ingalls Wilder and Garth Williams" will run from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Since 1987, the Mary Chilton DAR foundation has made over 500 grant awards totaling in excess of $3 million dollars. These awards had made a significant impact through community and statewide initiatives helping preserve South Dakota's pioneer spirit and the democratic past, honoring veterans, and expanding education horizons.
Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and improve our historic homes. Your generous donation will fund our mission in preserving Laura's legacy.
Your support and contributions will enable us to continue to provide educational programs and activities to children worldwide.
